Causes of Back Pain

The main reasons behind back pain, including prolonged sitting, sitting jobs, prolonged standing, and long hours of driving, alongside musculoskeletal disorders. For relief, integrate regular stretching, ergonomic setups, and consider chiropractic treatments

Prolonged Sitting
Prolonged sitting is the primary cause of back pain for most people. Sitting for extended periods takes its toll on your health. In fact, some people have compared the ill-effects of sitting to smoking. Sitting for six to eight hours, either at a stretch or a few minutes break every couple of hours exerts a phenomenal amount of pressure on the spine that it is not biologically programmed to endure. Most jobs today require people to sit at one place. Obesity and weight gain also play a significant role. With greater body weight, the thrust exerted on the spine is increased exponentially.
Lower Back Pain from Sitting Jobs at Desks
You may work from home or at a doctor’s office, or in a corporate office or cubicle. Sitting is considered the new smoking. Being sedentary at a desk is not good for your spine. Some things you can do are to set an alarm to get up and stretch every 30 to 45 minutes. You can also have your workplace verify your desk set up is ergonomically correct. Chair supports can make a difference as can the level of your monitor if you are looking at a computer.
Prolonged Standing
Anything in its extreme form is undesirable. Running all day is not exactly good for health. The human body is programmed to endure certain levels of physical stress. Whenever the body is exposed to any stress that it is incapable of bearing, it will show signs. One of these signs is back pain.
Driving for Long Hours
Many patients are opting to drive rather than fly when traveling.

Is riding or driving a car for long trips bad for your back?
Sitting in a vehicle for long hours is also a common cause of back pain. It can lead to long-term back, neck, and spine issues.

What can be done to relieve your back and neck when driving?
The chiropractors at Action Spine & Joint will share simple exercises you can do on your journey. When you stop for gas, there are stretches and movement you can do to reduce stiffness and take the pressure off your back. Many modern cars have excellent seats and they provide comfort while you are sitting but then the exercise of driving and the sedentary lifestyle is not really conducive to your spine or backbone. Effectively, you will have back pain.

Musculoskeletal Disorders
Different kinds of arthritis, injuries, spinal problems, herniated disc or slipped disc, pinched nerve and inflamed tissues along the spine or the back, sore and weak hip flexor muscles among many other health ailments can also cause or facilitate back pain. It is also possible that back pain is a referred pain.

Regardless of the cause of back pain, you can opt for chiropractic treatment. With spinal adjustments, physical therapy, massage, back strengthening exercises, posture correction, and minor changes to lifestyle, you can not only get relief from back pain but you can effectively bid adieu to it in a few weeks.

Chiropractic Care FAQ’s

What conditions benefit from chiropractic treatment?

Conditions benefiting from Chiropractic Care

Usually you think of lower back pain or spinal stenosis when you think of chiropractic. But it also helps with things like migraine headaches, neck and shoulder pain, ligament damage, knee injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and infantile colic.

Can Chiropractic help my “slipped disk”?

Spinal discs are not simply stacked bone segments. They are fluid-cushions that act as shock absorbers between the bones of the spine. The discs allow for pain-free movement and keep the vertebrae from grinding against each other. They work perfectly when the spine is correctly aligned.

When the spine gets misaligned because of stress, accident, or dislocation, the disc may “bulge” out between the vertebrae and lose their fluid. Eventually, the vertebrae rub against each other. This causes severe pain. Traditional treatment often involves surgery and pain-killing drugs.

Chiropractors work to gently realign the spine so that the discs no longer “bulge”. This prevents further deterioration of the disc and provides the needed cushion between the vertebrae, alleviating the pain.

Does chiropractic hurt?

Chiropractic adjustments can be very gentle. After the treatment , you may feel like you have had a good, solid workout at the gym. You may feel a bit of discomfort during the actual adjustment, but it usually lasts only seconds. You may hear some “popping” sounds, which comes from the bones getting back into line. It is the same thing as “popping” your fingers.

Is chiropractic “safe”?

Chiropractic practice is extremely safe. Chiropractic practitioners have a lot of training and experience to put just the right amount of pressure on your bones and joints and bring you back into alignment. And when you compare chiropractic with the number of mistakes in traditional medicine, chiropractic care shows up as very safe indeed. Some have estimated the risks as one million to one.

What kind of education and training do doctors of chiropractic have?

Before entering into a chiropractic college, one must complete a minimum of 2 years of undergraduate study, and many colleges require a four-year undergraduate science degree. Training in chiropractic care involves extensive study of the neuromusculo-skeletal diagnosis and treatment. The course of study focuses on three areas: (1) basic training in biological and health sciences, (2) specialized training in chiropractic theory, practice, technique, diagnosis, and application, and (2) extensice clinical and practice training with patients.
