Many musculoskeletal problems can be remedied without surgery. Chiropractic treatments are nonsurgical and hence noninvasive. Other than Fibromyalgia, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome and pinched nerve in various parts of the body, chiropractic treatment can cure herniated discs.
Herniated discs are very common among kids and adults. Injury, obesity, poor posture and weakening bone density are some of the many reasons behind herniated discs. Let us explore the causes, symptoms and chiropractic treatment of herniated discs in detail.
What are Herniated Discs?
Herniated discs are often referred to as slipped discs. The vertebrae which form our backbone have several discs.
These are known as inter-vertebral discs. The discs form a cushion between two vertebrae of the spine. These discs function to absorb shock, distribute the pressure and also help us have the natural posture. These discs have a hard outer layer and a gel like inner layer known as annulus fibrosus and nucleus pulposus respectively. When annulus fibrosus (the harder outer layer) cracks or incurs damaged due to injury or obesity or other factor, the gel like center or nucleus pulposus pushes outward and the gelatin like material tends to flow out. This is the condition that is known as herniated disc. Excluding the first two vertebrae, all vertebrae have discs and patients can have one or more herniated discs simultaneously.
Causes of Herniated Discs
Herniated discs primarily result from an injury of some sort. Patients who have a history of skeletal problems are more vulnerable to the condition. Being overweight, having poor posture, prolonged sitting, walking or even improper exercise can cause herniated discs. Spinal problems such as misalignment or irregular curvature of the spine can also cause herniated discs.
Symptoms of Herniated Discs
Initially, when the discs start to degenerate, one may not feel much pain and may not even realize there is something wrong. With time, there would be neck pain and back pain. Gradually, one would struggle to sit properly, stand straight and there will be strange sensations in the area around the disc at the back or neck or lower back. As the condition worsens, the pain will become unbearable. Treatment is recommended at an earlier stage so the situation can be prevented from worsening.
