First Visit to a Chiropractor
In this informative presentation, Dr. Casey Bearden from Action Spine and Joint provides valuable insights regarding your initial consultation.
Planning for Your First Appointment
At Action Spine & Joint, our doctors have had the chance to work with thousands of patients over the years. Those patients visiting for the first time often have many questions and don’t know what to expect from a first chiropractic visit. Since they may have only worked with traditional medical doctors in the past, you may have some initial apprehension. Our office staff has included some detailed information on what a typical initial visit will entail.
What to do before you come to the clinic
To expedite your visit, it is important to gather any medical data you might have, especially previous MRIs or X-rays. Some patients find it helpful to write out their symptoms, previous treatments and important factors like work history or a list of activities you do for fun – like gardening. Plan to spend 1-1.5 hours at your first visit.
Does a Chiropractor crack your back?
During a chiropractic adjustment, your back or neck may make cracking sounds. The reason for this is likely linked to air or gas in the lubricating joint fluid that encompasses the joints. When your spine is adjusted by a chiropractor, a vacuum often is created and when the air/gas is released, you will hear a cracking sound. If this does not occur, the adjustment may have worked just fine.
At first, a visit to a chiropractor resembles a visit to any other health professional. You are greeted by a friendly, competent staff member and asked to fill out a number of forms. Here is where you share your reports, such as MRIs. Arriving 15 minutes before your appointment time to complete these forms is helpful for keeping you on schedule.
Once you are in the doctor’s office you will be given a thorough examination, including discussing your prior medical history. Your doctor will order diagnostic tests and X-rays, if needed. Once all of the information is gathered, your chiropractor will tell you what can be done to alleviate your symptoms.
You will receive all the information you need to make a decision as to whether chiropractic treatment is for you. Your treatment plan may include chiropractic adjustments. Basically, the chiropractor will place you in a specific position, and move your bones back into alignment. Other activities, including massage, exercise, and instructions on posture and movement will help you on the path of healing.

What conditions benefit from chiropractic treatment?
Conditions benefiting from Chiropractic Care
Usually you think of lower back pain or spinal stenosis when you think of chiropractic. But it also helps with things like migraine headaches, neck and shoulder pain, ligament damage, knee injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and infantile colic.
Can Chiropractic help my “slipped disk”?
Spinal discs are not simply stacked bone segments. They are fluid-cushions that act as shock absorbers between the bones of the spine. The discs allow for pain-free movement and keep the vertebrae from grinding against each other. They work perfectly when the spine is correctly aligned.
When the spine gets misaligned because of stress, accident, or dislocation, the disc may “bulge” out between the vertebrae and lose their fluid. Eventually, the vertebrae rub against each other. This causes severe pain. Traditional treatment often involves surgery and pain-killing drugs.
Chiropractors work to gently realign the spine so that the discs no longer “bulge”. This prevents further deterioration of the disc and provides the needed cushion between the vertebrae, alleviating the pain.
Does chiropractic hurt?
Chiropractic adjustments can be very gentle. After the treatment , you may feel like you have had a good, solid workout at the gym. You may feel a bit of discomfort during the actual adjustment, but it usually lasts only seconds. You may hear some “popping” sounds, which comes from the bones getting back into line. It is the same thing as “popping” your fingers.
Is chiropractic “safe”?
Chiropractic practice is extremely safe. Chiropractic practitioners have a lot of training and experience to put just the right amount of pressure on your bones and joints and bring you back into alignment. And when you compare chiropractic with the number of mistakes in traditional medicine, chiropractic care shows up as very safe indeed. Some have estimated the risks as one million to one.
What kind of education and training do doctors of chiropractic have?
Before entering into a chiropractic college, one must complete a minimum of 2 years of undergraduate study, and many colleges require a four-year undergraduate science degree. Training in chiropractic care involves extensive study of the neuromusculo-skeletal diagnosis and treatment. The course of study focuses on three areas: (1) basic training in biological and health sciences, (2) specialized training in chiropractic theory, practice, technique, diagnosis, and application, and (2) extensice clinical and practice training with patients.
