Joint Replacement Alternatives
The human body is a marvel of engineering. The basic structure is held up by rigid bones. As in the old song, all of the bones are connected by joints. However, unlike a mechanical machine, the bones (ideally) do not actually touch one another. Instead, they are connected with soft tissues, such as tendons and cartilage, that cushion the joints.
Your body has many different kind of joints; some joints move very little, some bend in only one direction (like your knees and elbows), while others bend in two or more directions (like the bones in your spine or wrist). Flexibility varies from individual to individual and is affected by exercise (or the lack of it) and age.
Dr. Bearden is a Joint and Spinal Specialist who has more than 20 years experience treating all related injuries and conditions. SO…before you consider joint replacement, read thru the information on this website and give us a call to schedule a consultation visit!

Causes of Joint Pain
Action Spine & Joint recognize there may be many more causes of joint pain than listed; here we highlight a few that we encounter almost daily with our patients.
Joint Overuse or Strain
Probably the most common cause of joint pain comes from overuse or causing the soft tissue to move in ways it is not designed to do. Stepping on the side of a brick with overstretch the outside of your ankle and you wind up with a sprained ankle.
Other types of injury come from over use or over extension – think “tennis elbow” or “writer’s cramp”. Usually a bit of rest will take care of the problem. More serious injuries may require ice packs or immobilization.
Age Affects of Joint Conditions & Injuries
During the first part of life, our cells replicate rapidly as we grow. Injuries heal quickly and bruises and wounds go away pretty much on their own.
However, the process slows down as we no longer need to grow. The spongy cartilage that acts as a buffer between the bones of our joints loses its elasticity and becomes susceptible to injury.
Impact on Joints from Lack of Exercise
The adage “use it or lose it” certainly applies to body function. With our sedentary lifestyle, our joints are asked to do less and less.
Then, when suddenly called upon for movement, the muscles tense at the unusual strain and place a lot of strain on the tendons and ligaments that connect the joints. Unlike age, this is a condition that regular exercise, particularly stretching exercise, can help.
Diseases (Arthritis, Auto Immune, more) Contributing to Joint Issues
Many types of joint pain are actually caused by diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, gout, or hemochromatosis.
Auto-immune deficiency or cancer can cause the body itself to attack the healthy cells in your joints. Getting the right diagnosis is critical to treating these kinds of joint pain.

Chiropractic Care FAQ’s
What conditions benefit from chiropractic treatment?
Conditions benefiting from Chiropractic Care
Usually you think of lower back pain or spinal stenosis when you think of chiropractic. But it also helps with things like migraine headaches, neck and shoulder pain, ligament damage, knee injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and infantile colic.
Can Chiropractic help my “slipped disk”?
Spinal discs are not simply stacked bone segments. They are fluid-cushions that act as shock absorbers between the bones of the spine. The discs allow for pain-free movement and keep the vertebrae from grinding against each other. They work perfectly when the spine is correctly aligned.
When the spine gets misaligned because of stress, accident, or dislocation, the disc may “bulge” out between the vertebrae and lose their fluid. Eventually, the vertebrae rub against each other. This causes severe pain. Traditional treatment often involves surgery and pain-killing drugs.
Chiropractors work to gently realign the spine so that the discs no longer “bulge”. This prevents further deterioration of the disc and provides the needed cushion between the vertebrae, alleviating the pain.
Does chiropractic hurt?
Chiropractic adjustments can be very gentle. After the treatment , you may feel like you have had a good, solid workout at the gym. You may feel a bit of discomfort during the actual adjustment, but it usually lasts only seconds. You may hear some “popping” sounds, which comes from the bones getting back into line. It is the same thing as “popping” your fingers.
Is chiropractic “safe”?
Chiropractic practice is extremely safe. Chiropractic practitioners have a lot of training and experience to put just the right amount of pressure on your bones and joints and bring you back into alignment. And when you compare chiropractic with the number of mistakes in traditional medicine, chiropractic care shows up as very safe indeed. Some have estimated the risks as one million to one.
What kind of education and training do doctors of chiropractic have?
Before entering into a chiropractic college, one must complete a minimum of 2 years of undergraduate study, and many colleges require a four-year undergraduate science degree. Training in chiropractic care involves extensive study of the neuromusculo-skeletal diagnosis and treatment. The course of study focuses on three areas: (1) basic training in biological and health sciences, (2) specialized training in chiropractic theory, practice, technique, diagnosis, and application, and (2) extensice clinical and practice training with patients.
